Skin Tumor

Cindy (63.176.159.174) -

I have a four year old boxer male who has a strawberry tumor on one of his front toes. He has had two already removed from other locations. How is it possible to remove this tumor without him losing the toe. If it isn't treated what happens?

Comment #1 Lucy from Hickville, USA -

I personally wouldn't risk it. I would take the dog right into the vet and see what they say. Pets can't tell you what hurts in so many words like people can. It is best to have someone that may have dealt with something like this before take a look at. Maybe it can be removed and all will be good but you never know. I don't take any chances with our 2 dogs. If there is something wrong with them we take them in. I am sure we have put their kids through college now with the amount of money we spend on our dogs but that is part of having them.

hi, my name is shannon and my dog is a 7 year old lab. a couplr months ago me and my parents noticed a growth on her back. it looks kind of like a wart, but its to lumpy, not only that, it bleeds every now and then... Is this a skin tumor?

Shannon, my boston terrier had skin tumors just like you described. He had 2 of them removed 8 months ago. It's not cancer, but you should have them checked out to be on the safe side. Since the surgery, about 4 more tumors have popped up, but I don't want to put him through surgery again (he's 12 yrs old). They're not big.... the biggest is the about the size of the eraser on the end of a pencil.

Good luck.

Hello, my 9 yr. old sheperd mix female dog has developed a large black growth over a spot that she was shot , i believe with a pellt gun 4 or 5 years ago.It has just recently grew and she chewed at it and it was bleeding, so i put peroxide on it and now it is just fleshy raised lession which she licks often.Could this be cancerous? Thank you.. Suzann & Pet

My 15 year old dog has a tumor where his ankle would be if he were human. The vet told us he can't remove it because of where it is located and there is not enough skin to cover the wound. I don't understand it. It is not cancer and my dog eats, gets around, etc. but I can see it growing from an apricot to an orange size. I cannot put him down while he acts so normal. and no, it does not pain him, it just looks bad. The only other option I was given was to amputate his leg and was told he is not even a candidate for that. We rescued him from an abusive home 8 years ago and I would do anything to keep him a little longer. I guess there is nothing left but to pray for him.

Hi, my name is Dawn and I just discovered a growth on the back thigh of my lab/german shepard mix. He's four years old.

It looks like a nipple/wart. Its about 3/4 of an inch long and hard.

It wasnt there 3 weeks to a month ago.

I touched it trying to figure out what it was to look at it, and it hurt him.

Could this be cancer or just a skin tag?

Thank you, Dawn.

Hi My name is Brandy and I have an 8 year old Boxer name rebel. I just started to notice last week some red bumps then on friday there was a large tumor on his ear. The vet told us to remove it right away. It doesn't seem to bother him but i am having it cut right now. I sure hope it help and he will be successful in his surgery. I couldn't image if he doesn't wake up from his surgery he is my baby.

Hello all. The bumps or tumors that many of you are describing are normal in older dogs. I am not talking about the ones that bleed. That is something different. The growths that appear to be just under the skin are fat tumors, usually not cancerous. They can be checked quickly at the vets office. There is no removal necessary as they are just fatty deposits. Unless they grow really big and interfere with normal functioning, they usually do not need to be removed. This is just something that happens in older dogs. Also, the chewing of a spot or growth is normal in older dogs as well. This is phychological for some reason. It is nothing to worry about unless it starts to be infected. Hope this helps. Blessed are our pets.

I am looking for information on dog tumors. We took our Shih-tzu to the vet for a check up and at the time he had a small spot on his ear that looked like a small raised blood blister. The vet said that it is common in small dogs and it will go away. It grew to the size of a pencil eraser, in about two weeks, and was warty/bumpy in appearence. Now, it looks like it is drying up. It has turned black and scabby. What the heck is it? I mean its drying up, and going away, right? I think that I should take him to the vet again, but it seems that the vet is stingy with info. Any one else have this issue?

I have a 7 year old male tabby who has had a round, black tumor on his side for about 6 months. At first I thought it was a blood blister, but it's getting bigger and it is seriously ugly and seems to be mildly painful when touched. Have you ever seen a black tumor on a cat? If so, what should I be concerned about?

My lapdog has a lump above his neck close to his jaw. I was wondering whether this is a harmless bump or cancerous?

My 1 1/2 year old pug Sadie had something that grew on her nose. It is the size, shape color of a pencil eraser. I got laid off last month and have no income right now. I already took her to two vets who ripped me off and misdiagnosed her after spending about 3 minutes with her. I am so sad and frustrated. Is it cancer? Isn't she too young for that? Any advice on what I can do to help her?

I have a 8 year old weimaraner female. She went to the vet in March and she was fine but now has a lump where her shoulder would be.She seems fine and in no pain but what could it be?a fatty deposit, perhaps? Its very squishy to touch and not hard at all. Please let me know.

I have a 12 year old cocker spaniel and the tumor on her belly (which is the size of a tennis ball) has started to turn black. It kind of looks like a mushroom top on the tumor that is black. It also has been bleeding on and off lately. What could this be?

Comment #21 Chrystelle (122.49.172.86) - Fri Jun 20 13:11:17 2008

I have a 12 year old Terrier crossbreed and is always scratching but he doesn't have any fleas. His skin is all bumpy and dark - although he is a black dog. All his skin in between his hind legs is black with white bumps all over it. He doesn't seem to be in pain with this though and mostly itches himself at the base of his tail and the hair has fallen out. It looks like warts.

My American Eskimo Dog has a big bump under it's right eye. Could it be a tumor? Whatever it is, it feels hard and it's semi big!
