No Puppy Manners

I have an 18 month old Pit Bull named Maximus who plays very rough and can't be trusted when playing with other dogs. He does not know when to back off when the other dogs let him know.
He gets to anxious and when the other dogs have had enough it turns into a fight. Maximus is a loving dog and I want very much for him to have playmates, I just can't trust him from past experiences. Max and I are in obedience classes now and he can not go out to recess with the class because of this problem. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. All Max wants to do is play and have fun....
