My Black Lab/Border Collie mix eats cat poo as well. I heard that they don't like citrus-smells like lemon, lime, oranges, etc. But I'm afraid to spray it around the cat box because I also heard that cats don't like it either. I guess worst case scenario the cat poops on the floor and the dog cleans it up for me. I'm going out to get the pills from petco. I'll let you know if they work or not.

Is there some sort of medicine I can give my Chihuahua to make him STOP eating cat poop? We laughingly call the litter box the dog’s candy dish but were sick of it. After his candy treat then he wants to lick and love on us. EEEEWWWWWW!!!!! Help!

Dogs tend to eat feces because they sense protein in the feces. It could be due to what you are feeding your dogs. Look at the ingredients in the food:

-Make sure the first ingredient is a protein: not chicken meal or chicken-by-product meal, but just CHICKEN or deboned chicken.

-Stay away from Wheat Corn and Soy, they are hard to digest and are not very good fillers.

You can also try looking at the Whole dog journal which rates dog food on the protein content and other things as well.

I have a 7 year old black lab that eats cat poo - she LOVES it! So, it's not just this little dogs out there - its the 80 pound ones too! John and IDI seem to have the best solution - I am going to talk to my vet tomorrow about what to feed my cat to make the cat poo less tasty!

My Schipperke and my Aussie shepherd mix both eat it.

They started when we used organic kitty litter, but when we stopped they continued to eat it.

It's really disgusting! Any household items to stop the dogs from eeating it?

I have two pit bull american bull dog mixes. I also have a eight week old cat. The dogs eat her poo poo and i have noticed they have been throwing up lately so i wanted to know how sick this will make them. They also tear up the house pretty bad so i need help with this also.

I have a year and a half West highland white terrier and I am cat-sitting for my friend and I just found out today that my dog eats the kitten poo who is only a month old. I don't own a litter box yet but when I do I have no where to put it do keep it away from the dog. I've heard about the pills they have in petco.. I'll try it out, if only I know the name of it.

OMG! My boxer gets into the litter box all the time! I even have a lid over it, and made sure there is room only for the cats to get in it! But my boxer's head still fits! And it's grooosssss to see him eat the poo. ugh

Haha! I've had so many people ask me about this, and about the only thing that I can tell you has already been said above... when your dog eats any type of poop (dog, cat or other) it typically means that something is lacking in its diet. If that's not it, it then means that your dog likes the taste of Kitty McNuggets. ;-) Ask your vet to recommend a better dog food.

And don't let your dog lick you until the problem is resolved! ;-)

My terrier mix started eating our cat's poop. Just remember that cats are more agile climbers than dogs. I put her litter box on an out of the way table and built a set of narrow, tall steps so that only the cat could climb to it (you can also buy all sorts of climbing accessories for cats - usually carpeted.

I placed the cat in the new litter box location just once so he knew where to go. Problem solved!

I know that when dogs eat poop its b/c they need a change of taste every now and then....so at petsmart they have this gravy that u can put in the dog food and it changes it up every once in a while so try that....good luck! Hope it works!!!

its called stick the litter box in a closet and cut a hole in the side of the wall and let the cat go threw the whole, thats what my parents did, works like a charm =)

Hi everyone. It isn't the type of doge. It's the fact that it IS a dog and cat poop. They like the smell of it. Dogs love cat food, and that is what they are smelling "somehow" when they eat it. We have a black lab mix and she got into it all the time. As for our chihuahua, I can't say he has but I wouldn't doubt it. I put A baby gate up to block it off from the two dogs. They aren't able to jump over it (aren't that smart yet). As far as the pill, I don't know, . The baby gate seemed to do the trick.

My mastiff eats the kitty poop in the middle of the night and then jumps in my bed and starts licking me, not to mention his breath stinks its disgusting I dont want him to get sick what can I do?

Comment #118 Lindsi (98.151.224.8) - Sat Sep 5 11:58:12 2009

There is another reason they do it. It's a territorial thing. You know that animals claim their territory by making it smell like them; cats spray, dogs roll around on things. Eating another animal's feces is a way of removing that animal's scent.

My dog does it, too. Every dog I've ever owned would do it, if given the chance. And I agree, it is disgusting!!!

Dogs love cat poo. I don't know wha it is but they love the crunchy crystal flavor treats. And yes, vomited up cat poo is probably the grossest thing ever. Ever.

My 3 year old brown boxer dog loves to eat cat poop and acts like the litter box is a gold mine. I catch her in the basement attacking the cat box, tryng to fillher face with as much cat crap in her mouth as possible before I can stop her. Her breath smells like cat$**t. Her nose is covered in litter. My daughter likes it cause she doesn't have to scoop kitty's litter. She just let's the dog gobble it up and wins brownie points from me for changing it (no pun intended!).

i have a 7 month old jack russell it drags cat poop all over the house i really just wonder what makes it think that that is its own personal cookie jar cat poop is the nastiest thing i think there is but my treatment was i set the boundary for the in-visa fence right before the cat box and every time she goes near it ZAP it was kinda humorous at first now its just annoying even with the shock she will get zapped as long as she has to to get a bite i dont know what to do

They sell these pills on the petsmart website. "21st Century Coprophagia Deterrence" I haven't tried them yet, but I'm hoping they will work

I have a west highland white terrier(I'm a child and he's my brother's dog but he has become a family pet). We live by a lake with lots of geese, and lots of geese means lots of goose poo. He eats it like candy, but we try to stop him. Luckily the lake is on the OTHER end of the street so he can't find poo at home. It doesn't hurt him, and we've trained him not to lick us. But cats are a different story, even though I have never owned a feline(our family is very anti-cat) I hear they poo out bugs and worms, which could harm your dog. Try training him not to do it, every time you catch him yell at him. My mother is very... ah... PERSUASIVE when in a bad mood.
