Does anyone know if this illness in dogs can cause pneumonia?

Yes! Your dogs can be hypercondriacs too!

Since kennel cough is contagious ,you'll want to keep the "patient" away from other dogs until she has recovered.

To prevent your dog from getting kennel cough in the future, never board your dog at a kennel that doesn't require proof of immunization. And always make sure she's had her shots before checking in.

I have never put either of my dogs in a kennel but every year for their check-up they still get this crazy kennel cough treatment of some stuff blown up their noses that neither of them are thrilled to get. I would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to the health of my family including the dogs. They have just been getting this treatment the last couple of years I don't remember them getting it before that. It must be something preventative that vets are doing to cut down on the amount of dogs that get kennel cough. Sounds good to me.

So what exactly is kennel cough? Is it just a cold for a dog? I havent ever put a dog in a kennel. What can be done to prevent it if you do have to put the dog in a kennel?

I have adopted a beautiful cavalier king charles spaniel from a local pet store. He is almost 5 mos old and his name is Charlie. Unfortunately, Charlie is infected with Kennel Cough, so I can not bring him home until he has recovered. He is in isolation, and is being treated with antibiotics and is put in a "nebulizer" 4 times per day. But it has been almost 2 weeks, and he is still coughing, with apparent congestion in his lungs. I would love to bring him home and nurse him back to health, however, we have an older dog, Jacki, who is 19 years old, so don't want to expose her to Charlie until he is well. Since he has been taking antibiotics for almost 2 weeks, does anyone know if he is still contagious? Perhaps he just has a lingering cough.. but not contagious anymore? I just can't wait to bring him home, but don't want to take any chances.

i do foster care for kennel cough dogs from a local animal shelter. so far none of them (about 20 in the last year) have developed kennel cough. however, all of these dogs were diagnosed early and started on treatment immediately. not sure what the numbers would be for undiagnosed/untreated dogs.

My cats were taken to the vet and they told me that both of them have kennel cough. My cats have never been in a kennel. But, we do have a dog who goes to the groomers once a month and she's been sneezing up a storm, she also has the runny nose and eyes. Can my cats have gotten the kennel cough from the dog? And how can I prevent this from happening again? My male cat is in the pneumonia stage when we found out that he had it, my female is in the beginning. They are both on antibiotics to get rid of it. I asked the vet if they could have gotten it from the dog he said no.I looked it up and it quotes, "kennel cough is caused by a mixed bag of virus/infections agents, which YES can affect people and cats and even other pets." How I take this, this is very serious and my cats and my family can get this and it can cause pneumonia. We do have wild cats outside the house that go to the bathroom in the back yard where the dog goes. Can the dog get it from rolling in the cat urine on the grass?
