Introducing a dog to a newborn baby

Jeanette from AZ -

My brother and his wife are expecting a baby in December. They have 2 dogs that are quite aggressive and I'm afraid of how they will react when they bring the baby home. I told them that once the baby is born to bring something home that the baby has worn in the hospital so that the dogs can smell her "scent" and get used to her before she comes home. Any other suggestions?

I have 2 bigs labs, not aggressive at all, but I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and am pregnant with my son which is due in January. When my daughter was born my husband brought home a blanket that we wrapped the baby in at the hospital. When we actually brought her home we sat in a kitchen chair holding the baby and let the dogs sniff her. After about 2 minutes they went on their happy way. It frightens me that the dogs are aggressive and that they will be around this baby. Obviously the baby and the dogs should never be left alone together. If they are aggressive dogs they might need to seek outside help to help train the dogs before the baby is born.

I agree with you Lucy. They have decided to ask for someone's help in this. They have a friend of a friend who is a dog trainer and whom actually specializes in this area. Hopefully the dogs are trainable to be calm around the baby.

i have a newborn baby and a pitbull... the pitbull is a very sweet dog and was raised well for everyone freaking out. but she has been very skittish, she is "seems" very concerned with the baby and always tries to lick the baby. she also is always painting which is new for my dog. she is always alert and when the baby cries she cries also. i was wondering what i should do about the situation it makes me nervous. any suggestions?

hi. i'm expecting in may. i have a chihuahua that is like a big baby but very protective and dominant (small man syndom) he has improved very much. he gets so much attention when poeple come to my house i'm afraid he will get jelous. and my mother always has him in her arms i'm sure it won't be the same when the baby comes. i try to encourage her to leave him down (not to give him so much attention)i don't think she understands that.

the other thing i have a newfound land dog. big baby -120 lbs. just very big. and then the cat. she's not to freindly.

everyone is scaring me saying that i'll have to get rid of my pets. or my chihuahua can go stay somewere else for a while . or i'm going to have to get rid of my cat. help me make them understand that all can be prevented if you get them ready - and not last minute
