Do you trim your dogs nails?

Our dog has light colored nails and when we were kids, my dad use to clip our dogs all the time and they were black. I know there is a chance of bleeding, but with light colored nails you can see the veins. Im wondering if it is worth saving the 10 bucks and the time and do it at home. Is it hard to do?
