Cesar Millan-The Dog Whisperer

Lucy (66.24.100.217) -

Does anybody watch The Dog Whisperer? Cesar Millan absolutely amazes me. I watch his show in awe at how he gets these dogs to do what he wants in such a short amount of time. My husband laughs at me because I go around our house trying to shush my dogs like Cesar does and of course when I do it, it never works. He truly has a gift with these animals. I love the show and try and catch it whenever I have a half second free to myself. Anybody else a Cesar fan?

Comment #1 Jeanette from AZ -

I saw him on Oprah. I couldn't believe how spot on he was about her dogs. it definitely takes a certain kind of person to do what he does. I have seen only a couple of episodes of his show because I can never remember when it's on!!

I have several animals, a pomeranian (9 yrs), an Australian Shepherd (12 yrs), a Papillion (3yrs), a German Shepherd (1 yr), a Bengal cat (2 yrs), and two Pixie Bobs (6 yrs). They all get along (other than the occasional cat fight of just growling but no hurting). The dogs are all fine with each other and the cats. In the yard, the German Shepherd will chase everything else not known to him out of the yard.

My problem is that I'm 105 lbs and the German Shepherd is about 85 and much stronger than me. When I walk him outside the house, I don't know if he's trying to eat the other dogs when we are walking or play, but he is stronger than me. He has pulled me down on occasion. He loves to swim, and now that it is warmer he's going back in the pool. I'm going to try another coller. I've tried the choke coller and the halti. Now I'm trying the the training collar with the spikes. I don't like doing this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lori

I watch the show all the time. I have just recently gotten a new puppy and I'm having a few problems. He's 8 weeks old and he's a Pitbull. I'm having some house training problems. I bought the Puppy Pads and I take him out every time he eats and wakes up. I am thinking about buying some books to help. We bought him a kennel and as long as he's in the kennel he does fine, I know it will just take time. But yeah Cesar is Awesome it's amazing how well he understands dog psycology.

I am curious about why my 2yr.old great dane on her daily walks smells the ground more than keeping her head up? She is also a timid dog. Thank you Lucy

Ceasar is wonderful. I have been watching his show for awhile, and one show I remembered featured a Westie (west highland white terrier). The owner of the dog was having the same problem, that I was experiencing with my then 10 year old westie. She was going after the mail, everytime the mail carrier, would place it through the slot. I did what Ceasar was showing that owner to do, and it worked, problem solved. I hope he reads this email, because last night we had to make a difficult dicision and put our beloved westie dog Spunky of 14 years to sleep. She developed Kidney failure 10months ago, and last night, after taking her to the vet, her levels were extremely elevated and her red blood cell values were down. Even as I am typing this email, I am fighting back the tears, but we had 14 wonderful years with her, and I just have to keep telling myself that she is in a better place. Thanks for listening.

Hi, I have a 9 month old puppy, she has lab in her for sure and we're not sure about the rest. She is about 35 pounds and she is deaf. We work 12 hours a day and 6 days a week and we have been having problems with her destroying the room when we leave. She chews on everything she can. We have tried to put her in cages but she always seems to get out. We don't know what else to do with her. I was hoping you might have some suggestions. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you. Tamra

Question? I have a good friend, he is retired, and he has a lab, 6years old, very nice dog.Dogs name is cody.He loves his dog and spoiles him.He walks the dog everyday, the dog walks good on the leash, but does not listen off.the dog is good temperment.

Here is the problem.Numerous times now the dog has been attacked. When a dog comes over to him, My friend, peter, gets real scared and starts yelling , at his dog and the other dog, witch creats mayhem and the dog gets attacked, I have personally seen it happen. It has really caused lots of anxiety for the dog and him.Since the last attack june 2nd, peter is beside himself wanting to carry something to fight off the dogs.

I watch your show alot and I think you are so amazing, you really know dogs(animals)You also train people very well, witch they need.I'am a ferm beleaver that it is not the dogs doing wrong , they are just dogs, doing dog things.I'am a dog lover as well, owned many dogs, sheperds, lab, rotties.Witch that is what i own now, she is the greatest of dogs.loyal, smart, obeys.

My friend when i met him was terrified of rottweillers and when he met my dog, he was so happy to know a dog like her, he couldn't beleave that she was not a killer. So you can see what he, (peter) is thinking.

If there is anything you can help me, him with would be great, before he does something crazy to the nexted dog that just wants to say hi.

In my house I'am the pack leader and it shows with my dog.

I also have learned alot from watching your show, you have not only taught me alot about dogs, but you have taught me alot about life, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.Keep up the great work and keep teaching you have avery special gift.

I cannot believe that people genuinely believe Cesar Millan is 'amazing'.

I had to watch his programme after so many mixed reviews and I am disgusted.

He rules by fear - yes he gets results but he is a dangerous man.

There is no need for dominance displays, threats etc. in your household, I am the pack leader in my house with no need for harsh punishment or force. My dogs are happy, balanced dogs and I have no need to alpha roll them or 'bite' them with my fingers.

I do not use a choke chain but instead, a clicker a form of positive reinforcement, reward based training.

My dogs do as I request and we all live in harmony.

I would much rather have dogs that work for me out of choice than out of fear or intimidation.

Why not try getting hold of a book by one of the many positive reinforcement based trainers? 'Don't shoot the dog' and 'The Other End of The Leash' are incredibly good as well as 'The Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson.

The sooner this 'man' is stopped, the better and the safer we'll all be.

Well said, Lottie, I'm 100% in agreement.

A woman at work has a 5 month old dachsund puppy. She told me she spanks this puppy till she yips whenever the puppy does not come to her when she calls and when the puppy tries to get under the fence to the street. She believes that small dogs have attitudes and she is doing the right thing.she said the puppy now clings to her husband and that when she spanks the puppy, it is mad at her, but then they make up.I told her that spanking only makes the dog afraid of her and her hands. She believes she is doing the right thing with this dog.

Ceaser, can you send me an e-mail I can take to her, explaing the correct way to handle this situation? I feel very badly for this poor puppy, I can't get through to her, you are my only hope to help this pup.

hi Cesar,

well my best friend just got a new puppy about 2 or 3 months ago and he was about 6 weeks old and there is a 7 year old and a 9 year old girls that know nothing about dogs really. so they just think a dog/puppy is for petting and playing. and my friend and her mom and dad dont really know anything about dogs either. i tried to make them watch your show because he has become aggesive and dominent he will knock over the 7 year old and kind of "naw" on her head til someone pushes him off. he is potty trained but when he is in trouble of doesnt "feel" like going out side he will go on the floor. I come over about every day so when i come over i try to dominate the house for them and show them how to treat him but they still scream at him and chase him around when he gets into stuff and goes to the bathroom on the floor. they punish him not disiplans him. when he gets irritated or annoyed he will chew on the chair. when i try to make him submit he shows his teeth and bites me all over my arms and since he is still a puppy his teeth are even more sharp. i have a dog myself and i know how to "treat" her. she is the last dominant one so i use all my dominating tactics that i use on my dog on their dog and he still is aggresive no matter what. he is going to be a very big dog because he is already about knee high and he is only about 3 months old. their is a baby on the way so i feel like the baby could get bit realy badly if they dont "take action". i feel like i am no help because noone does their part in pack leadership. my arms are scarred and he isnt even my dog. so any help or recomendations would be great!!!

I have two dogs, a black lab 10 Shilo and a golden retriver 4 Savanna, I had Savanna not chasing cars or people but now she is back doing it again, how do I train her to come when I call her and not to chase cars or people.

Thanks

Comment #21 Michelle from US -

I don't like Cesar's tactics as well. I would much rather have a trainer who uses appropriate positive reinforcement strategies, instead of just forcing the dog into submission.

I have seen one show before and 2 little dogs attacked each other. I fell asleep though. LOL. Cesar my family needs your help before something happens. Something bad happens. this message is for lucy riggs.

all dogs will sniff the ground, for territory purposes. i know it can be annoying becuase i have 3 dogs.

train her to heal this way she will learn to respect tour strength better.

but if you are to stop her from sniffing as much whilst on the lead she will need letting loose to sniff in a secure field.

good luck

hi last message ill send to this forum for now but these people who think ceasar uses inappropriate training tactics, have him all wrong. i have 3 dgs and i DONT use ceasures training i only occasionally pinch a tip from him.

although i do not train my dogs using his methods, i do watch his shows and i have never seen him physically punish a dog.

the reason i dont use his methods is i dont feel he shows the dog enough love. he does love them, you can see this from his dedication but he does not show the dog this.

he trains them well but is never seen stroking or fussing a dog.

ceasur is awesome but needs to give the dogs some cuddles

I recently adopted a shelter dog that is part pit bull and perhaps beagle and hound. He is very sweet, gentle and obedient, a wonderful companion. However, he had a very bad separtion anxiety problem. The first time I left him alone he did a lot of damage to a door. the 2nd time he broke bars on a crate. I have trasined him a bit to stay and sit. But he gets very agitated when I am not there. Does anyone have an idea about how long it will take him to accept my absences and if he will?

I am mother of 3 young children and two puppy champion bred american pitbulls. They all keep me very busy. I am concerned that the dogs don't listen as well as they should and don't know what to do. They are very high strung and have issues with jumping on the kids and I'm scared they will hurt one of them by being so hyper. They would never hurt them intentionally. They are actually very good with my kids but very hyper and suffer from separation anxiety. All this is very difficult when you also have everybody looking for a reason not to like the kind of dog we have. Please help. I don't know how to calm them down.

How do you get a dog (on leash) to stop barking at other dogs when they pass by? He also lunges and ignores treats etc... I have also put him in a 'sit' which he will do but still is in a very excited state and barking... He also barks at me relentlessly on the agility course... He loves other dogs in his agility class and loves going to the dog park - is not aggressive or dominant at the dog park. He is NOT treat driven or toy driven. He is in such an excited state when dogs pass by that NOTHING will distract him. If the dog meets him he is fine wags his tail and moves on... The funny thing is that when we go to agility trials he doesn't bark at other dogs at all (even on leash) but walk him around the neighborhood and he goes nuts! He walks well on a leash when dogs are not around. I have talked to many trainers about this and they say that if he is barking because he likes other dogs it is difficult to train out of him...

Help! Jeanine

We have a 12 month old Maltipoo dog named Harley. We are having a few problems with him that we need help with but cannot afford to take him to classes. I am hoping that you can help us!

First, We cannot get him to eat dog food. We made the mistake of giving him people food and now he won't even eat that very much and no dog food. He does occasionally eat some dry dog food but not very much. What can we do to get him on track and eating regular dog food?

Now, here is the really big problem we have with Harley! He has Separation Anxiety! He has this Quite badly!! Anytime my husband leaves he gets terribly upset! (crying, barking, and jumping around!)and insists on being taken out to look for him. He will not settle down and constantly barks at the door as if he hears someone outside. He also constantly barks at every little sound and does not settle down until my husband returns! If my husband is out late he will not rest lay down or sleep until he returns! He is also used to sleeping with my husband at night. He will not sleep in my bed with me and he will fret and fret until he comes home. My Husband says he does almost the same thing when I leave to go anywhere! We cannot go out together anywhere because of the way he is! We cannot even go outside in the yard because of this behavior! I had my neighbor watch him for me when we had to go to a doctor appointment for me as I have many health problems and she said he was very upset and she thought he had a major case of separation anxiety also!

What can we do to help him get over this? He also does not follow commands and jumps and jumps on people the whole time that they are over! He will not stop this behavior no matter what we do! He also gets upset and barks and jumps on my husband and myself whenever we get close enough to have a conversation with each other until we separate from each other!! All these things are symptoms of what is wrong with him and it is making him and us very stressed and unhappy!

Can you help us? We would greatly appreciate any help you could give us!!!

We hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely Dixie

I have recently started watching the Dog Whisperer and I've got to admit that Ceasar is blessed with a very rare gift. He simply manages to calm any dogs no matter how aggressive they are within minutes. I've always had dogs as pets but since coming to UK I haven't had any except for a cat. I was touched by Ceasar's love for dogs and the way he understands them to perfection. I've always been fearful of pitbulls, German Shepherd, etc but now after watching Dog Whisperer I feel I shouldn't discriminate. Thanks Cesar and all the best in the world.

I just moved to college this year and I finally have cable so I have watched so much of The Dog Whisperer, Millan is amazing. I did read of a animal cruelty investigation/charge against him?? I also read that the SPCA and various other organizations are against him, feeling he is inhumane. However, what I have seen on the show makes sense. I actually tried shushing my dog instead of talking to him when I came home for fall break. He shut up and was like did you just shush me? He actually paid attention to me. I tried the whole "calm assertive energy" thing and it worked for me. I actually used to be really shy and our dog was aggressive toward me, especially when I went to sit with my mom (the top dog in our family) on the couch, he is very protective of her. I've learned since we got him to be calm and assertive, before I heard of it from Millan. I had never tried to define it though. It is hard to explain, but if you understand what he means and apply it as he does, it works. -No offense to anyone who hasn't gotten it to work-...my dog forced me to learn because I was sick of being afraid of him, letting him get his way. Even though I am at the bottom of the todem pole, he listens to me more than my mom because I don't let him get away with anything. Although, I spoil him by letting him sit on my lap while we both follow my mom like shadows :) I don't believe in choke(chain or prong) or electrical collars..which many articles have said he has used, but his methods, despite what he uses, are humane as far as I can see. I have certainly learned something from him. He must be doing more than something right when he can get such a big pack of dogs to live so quietly with each other. His show is one of my favorites and I really appreciate what he is doing for dog owners everywhere.

At the end of every show hes cuddeling one of his dogs or even 2 dogs. Of course he shows affection to the dogs otherwise they wouldnt love him as much as they do.

Hes there to train other peoples dogs to repect their owners not to cuddle and kiss the dogs. Hes there to do a job.

I'm 8 years old and I'm getting a dog but it has to be good with other dogs and probably cats as well. My mum says it can't be that big, what breed would you recommend?

Emilie xxx

P.S. I love your show and watch it every day.

cesar,

I have a 10 year old alaskan malamute/ shepard mix, we also have a 10 year old beagle and 4 year old yellow lab, and they all get along very well. My malamute "cody" is very timid at home but when we go away he sometimes will bite a person in the butt, he doesnt growl or bark just takes a nip out of them. Sometimes when we invite people in the house he will also get behind and sniff there butt, but has never bite anybody in the hous. He also has a proble with small dogs he lures them to him then graps them by the neck. He wasnt always like this it just seems it has been in the last few years. We watch your show all the time and hope maybe you have some advice for us.

Thank you,

Sandi and Cody

Any of you owners who have these agrresive dogs must try to obtain professional dog training. Some issues, such as those 9 dogs all fighting each other, or those 2 small dogs fighting, is simply not acceptable. These dogs can be injured greatly. And the more the dogs are allowed to fight, the more used to violence they will be. Please think about professional training.

Hi Ceaser,

I am sending you this on behalf of my daughter who absoluetly loves watching your program. Back in April we got a Shiba Inu puppy. We are having problems with potty training him. Also chewing up everything and nipping. Please help!!! His name is Piper and he is now a very important part of our family. I wish you could come and meet me daughter who I love very much. She does so much for me and I would love to have you do this for her. She really believes in you and she has alot of your products and books.

Cesar, love the show, I just got a mini doberman, having a big problem with potty training, HELP, what is the best way to proceed? I beleive he was caged, and we were told he was paper trained, he ignores our papers, He stays in a crate at night and is ok, will go when taken out. After that it's like a waiting game, the minute we get him back in he goes on the floor the rest of the day. He acts like a camel till we're not looking. We've had him 3 days and he is 13 weeks old Thank you, MARK
