IF SHE IS THEN THE KITTENS MIGHT HAVE an abnormal affect such as an exrta toe, mentaly retarded ect.

#2

Leah

haha thats funny, I do not know what will happen but I would call your vet to find out, and if you do not want another litter, than just give the kittens to the pound, or the humane society, simple as that!

#3

Angel

There are not any tortie boys. All torties and calicos are female.

Angel - Your info is wrong, there are too Tortoise Shell Males. About every 1 in 3, 000 developing Tortoise are male, and then a huge percentage of them don't live very long, the ones that do are usually sterile. But there also are non sterile ones, which are even more rare. You shouldn't really make a comment like that without knowing what you're talking about, no offense, but you're here on the Internet, you can easily do research to see that Calico males although very rare, do indeed exist.

The funny thing about that picture, if that other cat is his sister, usually orange tigers are only male! So you got two rare cats if that is him and his sister, funny.

Like I mentioned to the person who commented tho, Calico males are almost always sterile (if not, he's even more super rare and valuable), so honestly I wouldn't worry about the Sister getting pregnant, but anyway unlike humans it really isn't much of a problem if relative cats breed.

PS-

Again, although female gingers (orange tiger) aren't as rare as Male Tortoise Shells (calico), they also are rare. It would genuinely be funny if that was a picture of the two. Two rare births in one litter.

Anyway, it's been estimated that anywhere from 1 in 10, 000 to 1 in 30, 000 male Tortoise Shells are fertile and can have children. There is almost no chance of him being able to have kittens.

If she did get pregnant, I don't know if I'd neuter him or not, a male calico is already a super rare cat, one that can have kittens is crazy rare of the rare.

I don't like to elevate cats, the best cats in life are free, but he is really valuable :D

no such thing as male tortoiseshell cat

I would never breed a tortie boy. The reason you can get a tortie boy is if he is a XXY. Because two X chromosomes are required for the effect you see ( its called X chromosome inactivation, that occurs in females of ALL species - such as dry and oily sections of human skin - thats why females are referred to as mosaics) ANYWAYS. If somehow this male is not sterile (which is very likely) it has a chance of passing on an XY gamete to cause further genetic mutations.

I have a male tortie!! Just found out one of our kittens is a boy with black and red fur. 6 weeks old, he shakes a little in his back legs so probably some genetic abnormalities. I was going to give him away but now I'm probably going to sell him to make sure he goes to a good home. Email me for offers.

For those ignorant people that keep saying there is no such thing as a male calico cat, think again. I have one. I had him fixed when he was 6 months old. Do some research idiots.

To those who keep saying that male calico/tortoiseshell cats exist (and are even name-calling) - not quite. "Male" calicos/torties are hermaphrodites. They're neither male nor female.

#11

Shawn

"Male" calicos/torties are hermaphrodites - If this is the case, then I should be attracted to all "Male" Torties.

"Male Tortoiseshell DO exist"

It's a MALE born with an extra X, but it is indeed still a MALE.

"In a biology, a hermaphrodite is an animal or plant that has both male and female reproductive organs"

These male tortoiseshell cats do not have female reproductive organs at all. They are males with an extra X. A genetic anomaly, but still quite male.

Please if you want to argue the case, go argue it with the scientific community or the rest of the world that calls them male for that matter, but the simple truth is your facts are absolutely wrong - no matter if you want to believe it or not.

There are male tortoiseshell cats. Please stop enlighten yourself and remove your own ignorance by doing some research...

"Tortoiseshell male key-cats"

By the way, when it happens in humans, it's called "Klinefelter's syndrome" - the description is a MALE being born with an extra X chromosome. They are still male tho, they are not hermaphrodites, which is a totally different condition. They are called XXY males - notice the MALES in the name because they are still male... I just seriously get upset by ignorance which is very easily overcome if someone just does a little research, so please just go checking up on various subjects before claiming they're hermaphrodites or saying they can't be born male.

"Tortie hermaphrodite "

I, too, have a tortie kitten who we thought was a male at first, but now realize that he actually has both sex organs, but acts like a tom cat. There are male torties and hermaphrodite torties - two separate conditions.

"Tortie male"

I have a 7 week old male tortie. What I've read says that it can result from XXY as others have mentioned or be a mutation on the gene that causes orange color, so they can be fertile, and even if not fertile, will have the hormones that cause male cats to spray.

I've also read that these cats are more inclined to testicular cancer and autoimmune disease. My kitten has had diarrhea and URI since I've had him, so I am wondering if he will be more sickly than other cats.

"Tortie cats"

Wow, you too?? We brought two kittens a few years ago, thinking we had one female tortie and one female domeatic cat.

Turns out the tortie was a boy! I caught him humping my cat and did some research. Luckily boys are usually unable to have kittens, so you should stay with your two adults and no new family members :)

~Hope this helped! Good luck with your cats ;)

PS. Does anyone know if hermaphrodite cats are fertile?? My cat had kittens but i now suspect her to be a hermaphrodite!

"Male Tortie Cats"

I have a friend in SAfrica who has just ddiscovered his male Turkiish Van kitten is a tortie. He too is worried about hm being fertile or if not the aviseability of bredding him. I'll refer this forum to him for guidance.

I live in Cyprus where the O gene is common amongst cats and as such red tabby SLH female cats are frequently seen. I just shipped one SLH red female (no white markings) with a very long silky coat to Holland. The incidence of the unique Turkish Van marker in Cyprus cats is slightly higher than in Turkish Mainland cats.

Thank author of this post/comment"Diluted Male Tortoiseshell "

I too have the pleasure of owning a male, 6 week old, diluted torti. Yes, they do exist. He and his siblings were dumped in the middle of nowhere and a friend was fortunate to find them. There was also an orange diluted female in the litter. Appears they are becoming more common.

Thank author of this post/comment"Tortie Male"

Yes! My half hymlian blue seal point colored cat just gave birth. She produced 4 males one a true tortoise color, and white with black spots, a calico (yes male), a grey striped and a female black tortie. I couldn't believe she made 2 rare colors.

And yes, calico and tortoise cats can be male. It is rare. They have the xxy cromo. The genetics are very interesting actually. Rare but definitely possable.

I am the very roud owner of a MALE tortoishell cat who will be 14 years old in August. He is known as Mr.Tat in our family. When we bought him the lady at the pet shop assured us it was female but six months later 'she' was seen to be cleaning bits that only boys have. We went straight down to our vets and it was agreed it was a male. Everyone in the vets was so excited as it is very rare to have a male torti. We weren't sure if he could breed ot nor but had him neutered anyway. We also have a 8 years old female tortoiseshell cat called 'sally cinamon'. Both are very beautiful cats.
