| My cat gave birth to only 1 kitten??Last night at 5:40ish my cat Luna gave birth to one kitten, She didn't know what to do with him at first, just yelling at me, and then at the kitten with the placenta still attached. I had to move the kitten to the designated queening box I had set up for her, she followed quickly and moved inside once I set the kitten down.. eventually within a few minutes she began eating the Placenta. After she cleaned him up, She looked like she was breathing heavy and panting after she meows a bit. This went on periodicly for a few hours, she ate, drank, walked around, allowed the kitten to feed.. She now likes to hang out side of the box for a while, and will feed the kitten with some guidence. It's her first 'litter'. Her nipples have began to return to normal, with the exception of a few of them. Is she done having kittens? It's now 11:40am the next day, so it's well beyond 10 hours since his birth. He's healthy looking, and strong.. Should I be worried for the mother cat? Should I take them to the vet? She seems 'okay'. She constantly meows for my attention whenever I decide to relax a little. Is she trying to tell me something? Or is she just excited and confused about her kitten? |
#1Twilight Zone, Mississippi | Once a cat I owned gave birth to only two, and that's all she had. If you're afraid there may be something wrong, check her belly (if she lets you), and see if there are any lumps that feel like possible babies. Which, any lumps will most likely BE babies. Should be firm and roundish. If her belly is slimmer than it used to be, and presses in like your unpregnant belly is, she's likely through with it.If there ARE lumps, however, definately go to a vet. These babies may have been stuck and she needs a cecarean (sp?) section. Yes, animals need this sometimes and if not, they could get still borns a few days later, or even develope stone babies. If she's sensitive to that area (which is why she most likely WON'T let you see her) try to lay her down on her back or get her into position to see if you can see her tummy area; if it looks swollen and/or lumpy, there's a good chance she still has babies. Don't wait too long on this. Check as soon as possible. |
#2Twilight Zone, Mississippi | When I said "used to be" I mean while she was pregnant. If she's still about the same size she was, that's another indicator. If she didn't gain much weight to begin with, well, an indicator she is likely to only have one kitten. |
