well. the easiest way to determine how far along the queen is, is to notice the behavior. this might be slightly hard for you, seeing as it is a stray cat. usually, the week before she is ready, she sleeps and eats alot. because she knows she will need all the strength she can get (they dont call it labor for nothing!!) a day or so before she goes into labor, her nipples begin to produce milk. if the cat trusts you enough, try and pet her and let her get more used to you. this way, when she DOES have her babies, she might let you share in her joy. =]

I rescued a stray because I noticed she was declawed. How ever there are other a male cats the live outside around my house. I'm a tad concerned she may be pregnant, If she was not fixed her chance of being pregnant is very high. This is the first female cat I've ever owned. I'm not sure what to look for and anything.

ok so the same thing happened to me acctually she is sitting right next to me she has really gotton used to me. I really don't want to let her out just in case she has them , and i don't want them to die. How can i tell shes going into labor , and what do i do when she does go into labor?

Comment #9 Hope this helps (74.170.240.124) -

Gir:

I think it's great that you're helping the pregnant cat - you may save the lives of those kittens! Cats.about.com has information about oncoming labor. They do say that you should keep the cat indoors until she's given birth. Try the article "So your cat is pregnant" on that site. Cats instinctively hide their young, and it's much easier to keep tabs on them inside than outside. They will very likely be hidden away outside for several weeks if born outside.

Spayusa.org has referrals to low cost spay/neuter referrals in your area. Also, lovethatcat.com (link to spay/neuter at bottom right) has referrals.

Good luck!

You can just about tell when your cat is going into labor. The queen is pregnant about 60 days, give or take a few. If she's pregnant when you got her, like ours was, you have to watch the tell-tale signs, like the fur around the nipples starts to recede a little, showing a bald spot around the nipples. She also begins to show signs of producing milk. The area around the nipples will grow larger and puffy and she may even secrete a little milk. Her tummy may or may not be pretty round. She will begin to look for a place to have the kittens in the week or so before birth. She becomes more affectionate, tends to eat and drink alot, and sleeps more. As labor comes on, she may be restless, may meow or cry out a little as she has labor pains. She probably will have a bloody discharge from the l opening and you'll see that the opening has opened (dilated) somewhat. Labor can progress fast depending on the size of the kittens or may be slow. Our first cat to have kittens took 4 hrs to have 3 kittens. We have 1 in labor now as I write this email. Have at hand some dental floss (for tying off the umbilical cord) a pair of clean sharp scissors (clean with alcohol) and some clean, dry, old towels. Most times the mother cat will do fine on her own, but may occasionally she need some help. If she can't push the babies out...or starts bleeding heavily, this is an EMERGENCY and she must be taken to the vet immediately, or you risk losing her and the kittens. If she gets a kitten part way out and just can't push anymore, hold the towel under the kitten and GENTLY tug with her next contraction. DON'T pull hard or you may injure both the mamma and the kitten. Take the towel and wipe the kitten's face off and, if necessary, briskly wipe the kitten's body off to stimulate breathing. You might have to take the placenta off the kitten. If you do, don't panic, just wipe it or gently tear it from the kitten's face first. If you have to tie the umbilical cord (sometimes the queen won't do it. use the dental floss to tie the umbilical cord about an inch from the kitten's body, then 1/2 inch above that closer to the placenta. Tie it tight, but you don't want to cut it in two with the dental floss. Cut the cord between the ties with the scissors. Give the kitten to the mamma asap so that it can start nursing. I am a nervous wreck, like an expectant grandparent, but I am sure she'll be OK. I know this is late, looking at the postings, but hopefully will help the next person. Take care and happy catting. :)

A while ago there has been this stray cat walking around my house. Two weeks ago I took her to the vet to see if she was sick or anything. When the vet person came out she said nope. not sick, but she is pregnant and she is due in two to three weeks. It has already been two weeks and about five days ago she started eating a lot twice as much and yestreday she barley ate any of her food. Yesterday she also had a little blood come out her. She has been sleeping a lot, licking her area, and not eating a lot. Is she in Labor?

To Fiona (commenter 11) one year is not too young, I think. Dont quote me.

My kitty got pregnate at less then a year old (about) with a male cat not even six months. She only gave birth to ONE kitten, but it survived and she knew exactly how to take care of it.
