If you are pregnant and you have cats you should not be cleaning out your litter box. Have someone else do it for you. Also if you have cats that go outside and there are a bunch of stray cats in your neighborhood and you are pregnant you need to wear gloves when working in your garden. Cats use these places to go to the bathroom. Also make sure you wash your hands after working outside really well. I don't have any cats but I am 7 months pregnant. I use gloves in the garden all the time. My friend was not sad when she was pregnant because she couldn't clean the litter box. Her husband had to do it.

What exactly can you contract from the cat poop that is dangerous to the unborn baby? Ive heard this myself but never knew the reasoning behind it.

It's called Toxoplasmosis. You can find all sorts of information about it online. It's a parasite that is not really a problem in healthy adult cats. But better safe than sorry.

I had no choice when I was pregnant. I made sure I didn't breath and used gloves. My husband travels alot and someone had to do it. I had no problems. Not to suggest that it is a good idea, cause it is not.

LOL! You can breathe. Buy yourself some masks and use gloves. The chances of your contracting Toxoplasmosis from your adult indoor cats is almost non-existent. But we don't take unnecessary chances with pregnancy. You did great!

It's a good thing I don't have any cats back when I had my baby back in my tummy or after it. What we do have is a dog, but I think I had successfully avoided the threat of Toxoplasmosis because my son grew up as a healthy 2 year old boy now. Every parenting tip is truly welcome though how bizarre they may sound, following them is not wrong if the health and life of you and your child depends on it.
