mike (64.76.37.16) -

how long does it take for atiel eggs to hatch.

From: http://www.cockatielcottage.net/breeding.html

"Cockatiel eggs will hatch 18-21 days after actually nesting began. Candle the eggs on day 5 of nesting to see if they are fertile."

It's a little more involved than just waiting a couple weeks, so check out that website for losts of info.

That was SUCH a big help! I had no idea all that was involved. We have had this pair together in a cage, not PURPOSELY to breed. When the eggs appeared, I thought I had better get started researching. Thanks again...great website.

Cockatiel eggs take 21 days to hatch. The parents take turns and continue to sit until the chicks are nearly fully feathered (around 4 weeks after hatching).

What does it mean to candle the eggs? I have never heard of this before.

Isn't candling eggs just holding them up in front of a candle flame so you can look inside and see if there is an embryo?

Maybe its done with a normal light these days?

So they can have an egg without an embryo? Is the egg just empty inside then or still have other yucky things inside? I never knew of this test. I would assume that you couldnt get to close to the heat source or should the egg stay warm?

my mom has two cockatiels at her house one female and one male. well, she laid 2 eggs and has been laying on them and wont let anyone near her, and the other day she laid another egg. what do we do with the eggs and how do we know if she is sick from egg binding? she we separate the two birds? they dont get along anyways.

Comment #8 Sams from Petzone -

Candling egss is ok, but I think whether or not the eggs are hatchable can be known by the weighing them in you palm. If it's hatchable then it can be easily known by the weight the egg has.

Candling is important. I have hatched many, many eggs on my own in my incubator and I found that candling is a necessity for more than a few reasons. For one, it's important for the egg to be rotated a few times at least once a day, and the parents get off to let the egg cool every once in a while. This is also good for the embryo inside. Also, if you're hatching a clutch, finding out when an egg is bad as soon as possible is important, for a contaminated egg can make the other embryos ill. If you're hatching the eggs yourself, it's also important to talk to the eggs later on in incubation - mostly during hatching. Their parents urge them on and sometimes a baby won't hatch without that encouragement.

Candling is great. You have to do it for hatching any birds because a bad egg will cause problems. I have heard a number of reasons for this including that a bad one can make the others sick, and also that when that egg doesn't hatch then the parents wil keep sitting it and they can ignore or injure the other chicks. I don't know how much of that is true but I never left a bad one around long enough to find out.

Candling is also used extensively on commercial chicken eggs to make sure that you don't crack open a half developed chicken when you go to make breakfast.

It's been 10 days since 3 eggs were laid. I tried candling today and only saw a small round yellow part on the side of each egg. Did I candle it properly? Are my birds sitting on the eggs? Is it too soon to tell? Do the eggs still have a chance? Are both cockatiels female? Please help.

My cockatiel has laid and egg...it's been two days...how much longer should it take?

Hey I have three cockatiels in one cage and 2 are male. the female layed an egg but hardly warms it up. i candled it and it looks like its growing something inside..To me it looks like a slow process because they layed it a while ago but the embryo doesnt seem dead. Should i just leave the egg for acouple of more days?

I have three cockatiels. 2 Boys and one girl. The girl just laid a rather large amount of eggs. 8 actually. Only 2 remained intact. The others broke since she was on a perch in the cage when she laid them. All three birds take turns just rolling the eggs around. It's like they know they need to do something but can't figure out what to do with the eggs. They have yet to actually sit on the eggs. How long should I keep the eggs in the cage before I should take them out?

How can I get the birds to get the idea to sit on the eggs?

Frustrated in Colorado

I was candling an egg this afternoon and accidently dropped one on the carpet. it didn't crack and still seems to be in good repair. i am worried that I damaged the embroy in some way. Should i remove the egg and assume that I did damage or should I go ahead and give it back to the mom? I gave it back and now I don't know which egg is which. I am also worried that if the egg is damaged it will damage the other eggs.
