I know on the flea medications and such it always says not to use on baby kittens and dogs. I wonder why that is? I mean, couldn't you just use a smaller dose of the same medication for a smaller pet?

Good question. I wonder why you cant. Does the powder effect the smaller cats and dogs? Maybe it has something to do with development? Id like to know the answer.

On the flea medications we have it is based on weight. So you could not use my flea medication which is intended for dogs 55-100 pounds on a 19 pound puppy. They make flea medication for puppies and it is a lot cheaper than buying stuff for a full grown dog like my beasts. I would not want to even guess at how to adjust the amount for a little one. Talk to your vet and get the right stuff. You never know how medication is going to affect an animal and you want to make sure you have the right dose.

Some medications it also has to do with how it affect them. Just like humans some medications affect children differently than they do adults. So you could give that to an adult dog and get the intended effect, but a puppy's reaction could be the exact opposite. Flea meds aren't in this category, but many others are.

I would have to agree with najdoyza, dogs are a lot more similar to the physiology of us human do. Just imagine, a cough syrup intended for a twenty years old be given to a three year month old baby. Imagine what would happen... the worst and much possible thing would happen is fatality. Older means sturdier or healthier immune system, resistance to major ailments and adverse effects of medicines and ointment unlike its younger counterpart. Why use a flea medication to a pup in the first place? Why not let them be.
