Animals and aspirin

BadGRRL from the pound -

I have heard that you can give dogs aspirin and it works much the same way as it does in humans. Is this true? And can you give it to cats or other animals as well and for what purposes?

Comment #1 citronkid from bird nation -

I know that you can buy specific meds for animals but I wasn't aware that you could give them regular human aspirin or baby aspirin. I looked it up and found this site. It has recommended dosages based on animal size and weight.

Comment #5 Jillian from Iowa City IA -

my vet told me to give my dog baby asprin for a fever and he weighed 65 pounds...I would just check on how much but I do know that you are able to give them baby asprin.

I learned that asprin right after surgery can be deadly.

also, if it's worth anyhting, i learned that because of our snake problem here. they put tylenol in dead rats so that when the snakes eat em they end up dying.

What kind of pain medication is safe to give to my dog?

You should only administer drugs if advised to do so by a veterinarian. With regard to the dosage for cats, it varies by size/weight. Since cats liver metabolize slowly, giving a cat aspirin can be deadly. The only dosage I've heard to be safe is 1/4 of a baby aspirin every 3 days & that is only recommended if your cat has heart disease or has blood that tends to clot. (to keep it clot free) If your cat is in pain, you should find the root of its pain. Cats have a very high tolerance for pain, so if it is due to an infected wound or bad toothetc., it is better to treat the infection with some type of antibiotic & as the infection clears up, the pain will go away, hence no need for aspirin. Hope my advise helps.

Sarah, why is your dog in pain? If its due to infection, he/she needs antibiotics prescribed by a vet. If he hurt himself, usually ice first, then warm compresses. If he has hip/joint problems, hyaluronic acid or glucosomine formulas are know to be great! If all else fails please don't wait, take him/her to the vet!

what animals are directly affected by aspirin poisoning?

About giving dogs aspirin-it's BEEN VERY SAFE AND EFFECTIVE FOR ME. Our dog was hit and required extensive surgery-and the vet assured me that I can use a baby aspirin for him occasionally. He had meds 4 pain, but the anti-imflam meds seemed to give him bad side effects after a few days. He seemed to do just fine on a small dose of aspirin-but don't overuse it! if the pain still persists-call the vet!
